BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. — Over 70 high school students from across the region gathered on February 27 at Hennepin Technical College for the first annual 2026 Minnesota High School Cyber Challenge, a hands-on competition designed to showcase the depth and diversity of careers in information technology.
The event served as a capstone experience for local students who participated in IT training through Hennepin Tech’s Information Technology program and its designation as a National Center of Academic Excellence (NCAE), recognized by the National Security Agency (NSA). Planning for the event began in November 2025, funded through a grant from the agency.
Throughout the day, students competed to solve IT and cybersecurity challenges based on job competencies defined by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). Events included Network Administration, Cybersecurity, Programming, and Technical Computer Applications, offering participants exposure to multiple IT pathways in a single, high-energy setting.
Dr. Ryan Brovold added that the event doubled as a “warm-up to the upcoming SkillsUSA state competitions,” helping students sharpen their technical skills while building confidence in a competitive environment. He also acknowledged and thanked Heidi Mattson from SkillsUSA for her participation and support in making the event possible.
Industry leaders were also part of the program. Kellen Montague and Shabnaz Benitez from Abbott Laboratories delivered the keynote address, sharing insights about careers in technology and the growing demand for cybersecurity and IT professionals across industries.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Brovold encouraged students to carry forward what they learned, echoing the mission promoted by the NSA to strengthen cybersecurity awareness nationwide. He urged students to deepen their understanding of IT and to help educate others about safe and responsible technology use.
“My one hope for the day is to help encourage curiosity in Information Technology careers,” Brovold said. “Hopefully, today will help spark that.”
With strong student participation, industry engagement, and competitive energy, the inaugural Minnesota High School Cyber Challenge marked an exciting new tradition for Hennepin Tech and the next generation of IT professionals.
